What can be learned from the current global pandemic situation? It has led to significant changes in our daily lives and is influencing economic, social, educational and other activities.
It might be able to change some of our basic established attitudes towards a lot of things. Or not? It is being discussed in media, blogging, research literature and so on, covering topics that also include approaches to community and international public health response e.
We invite research articles of 6,, words that theoretically and empirically ground epistemological and societal implications of the pandemia, including skepticism on its global nature.
There will be no special issues. Along with it, there are two major deadlines for full papers: 1 - August 1 2 - October 1 We warmly invite philosophers, science studies researchers and other scholars interested in the proposed topic.
In case of any questions please contact Dr. Each year, the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, invites around 25 scholars to be in residence for the full academic year to pursue their own research.
There has been, in recent years, a revival and renewal of political mobilizations and social movements across the world in terms of claims as well as forms.
From Hong Kong to Santiago, from Beirut to Algiers, from the Tahrir Square to the Gezi Park, from the indignados in Spain to the yellow vests in France, massive demonstrations have shaken state apparatuses, provoking democratic reforms or passive resistance, prompting the fall of governments or brutal repressions.
In parallel, from gay rights to ecofeminism, from humanitarianism to veganism, from BlackLivesMatter to MeToo, from No Borders to Extinction Rebellion, numerous initiatives have raised awareness regarding issues related to various expressions of injustice and domination, and have sometimes generated major cultural transformations of contemporary societies.
Whereas these progressive mobilizations and movements have received much attention, there has also been a resurgence of reactionary, conservative and antidemocratic responses grounded in traditionalist, fundamentalist, nationalist, xenophobic, racist, sexist and anti-feminist ideologies, which have been less studied and deserve more scrutiny.
In light of this remarkable diversity, from the far left to the far right, we would like to revisit two related classical themes of the social sciences: contentious politics and collective action.
How are these manifestations of discontent about the current state of affairs to be apprehended? What do they signal about present moral, political and social crises?
Are novel modes of organization being tested? Are new repertoires of action being invented? Which place does violence or, conversely, civil disobedience occupy?
Under which conditions can they succeed or, on the contrary, be crushed? What are the role and responsibility of academia with regard to these protests?
Which possible articulations can there be between critical theory and such mobilizations and movements?
These are some of the questions we would like to address via a conversation across the disciplines of the social sciences and the humanities, in particular anthropology, sociology, history, law, philosophy, economics, political science, and literary studies.
All approaches are welcome, but we are especially interested in research seeking to connect empirical investigations, be they archival, ethnographic, statistical, etc.
The theme will be led by Didier Fassin, James D. Linder Professor at the Institute. We are witnessing a controversial public debate about the appropriate measures to contain the health risks, but also the economic, political and social consequences of the pandemic.
At the same time, all manner of socio-technical infrastructures are being subjected to considerable stress tests: from the basic healthcare infrastructure and logistics for food and daily consumer goods, to the digital communications infrastructure and issues of privacy protection.
Far-reaching restrictions to contact and curfews, travel restrictions, geopolitical distortions, increasing requirements for domestic, elderly and child care work, very acute health risks to citizens — the CRC understands these developments as a large-scale and unanticipated social breaching experiment that renders visible the everyday ongoing accomplishments of interactional practical infrastructures and technical infrastructures alike.
The annual conference brings together scholars and practitioners from various fields to develop an understanding of the unfolding crisis in media and social theoretical terms.
Thus, instead of asking what the long-term consequences of the COVID pandemic might be for society, politics, the economy or the planetary environment as a whole, the CRC annual conference aims to closely investigate the micro- social dynamics and infrastructural experiments unfolding at the present time.
The assumed ubiquity of an invisible pathogenic agent affects practices of cooperation on various scales: from the pragmatic interactional challenges of navigating public space while wearing a breathing mask and maintaining distance from other people, via expressions of solidarity towards risk groups in isolation and vocal public protests against governmental restrictions on mobility and personal freedom, up to the dimension of international political cooperation between nation-states and supra-national entities.
At the same time, a multiplicity of data-intensive media infrastructures and control mechanisms are rapidly being developed to keep track of the spread of the pandemic, to mitigate its effects locally and globally and to offer alternatives to established routines of social cooperation: these range from digital monitoring tools like smartphone contact tracing apps, to escalating innovations of video-conferencing and sensor-based crisis infrastructures comprised of drones and cobots, among others.
The intertwined dynamics of publics and infrastructures are accompanied by a deluge of data that serves as the foundation for political decision-making and — in the form of data visualizations distributed widely via social media — as public knowledge resources to reorient individual and collective opinions and behaviors.
However, at the same time, the corona virus SARS-CoV-2 is shaping new communities of practice and making the cooperation conditions within a society visible, e.
The conference will most likely itself be affected by ongoing travel and contact restrictions, which is why it will explore new ways of combining pre-recorded virtual talks, moderated online discussion groups, and possibly selected face-to-face or possibly: mask-to-mask formats to bring together an international range of scholars, activists, artists and practitioners to investigate the challenges of pandemic cooperation.
Please send your abstract of approx. Please indicate which form of presentation you would like to give video, slides-and-text presentation, artistic format, … and which time zone you will be presenting from.
Another possibility is to suggest pre-structured panels or podium discussions that will be organized as livestream events during the conference.
We are very open for innovative virtual conference formats and specifically welcome fresh ideas for presenting and discussing your research with a remote audience!
The aim of this workshop is to develop papers on the development of the history of materials research. We are also looking to incorporate select contributions into a four-volume history of materials to be published by World Scientific Publishing in It starts from the assumption that an open exchange between historians, materials researchers, and related fields can lead to good and useful history.
Practitioners have unique insight into their own fields, and scholars in the humanities have expertise in narrating complex subject matters.
We want to develop papers through an exchange of ideas in a setting of mutual respect. Nelly Oudshoorn Resilient Cyborgs.
Living and Dying with Pacemakers and Defibrillators. Resilient Cyborgs examines how pacemakers and defibrillators ICDs participate in transforming life and death in high-tech societies.
Because of the persistent and widespread presence of technologies implanted in bodies, understanding the agency, vulnerabilities and resilience of people having these devices has become an urgent concern.
The book argues that implanted technologies can best be considered as body-companion technologies. This concept invites us to approach technologies inside bodies as devices that act as life-long companions requiring extensive work to sustain the multiple, often mutual, relationships between humans and technologies.
Other important heuristic tools developed in the book include conceptualizing the active engagement of cyborgs in building resilience as work; accounting for their expertise by including sensory experiences and resilience techniques; following the whole life cycle of hybrid bodies, including dying and death; and a sensitivity to difference.
Our group is working across a number of technological domains with a focus on communication and values. We aim to become a leading research environment for the study of responsible technology, focused on themes such as public engagement, legitimacy, ethics, co-creation, responsible innovation and science and democracy.
You will be expected to design a research portfolio which aligns with this. You will be engaged in high-end publications, grant procurement and experimental outreach in collaboration with other team members.
You will also participate in research-based teaching and supervision with associated examination commitments at bachelor, master and PhD levels.
We also seek to involve external partners in our research and teaching and to develop a portfolio of integrative and collaborative research.
We contribute to outreach and public debate and expect you to be actively engaged in research communication to relevant stakeholders and wider publics.
We value a collective, generous, playful and supportive work environment and we expect you to contribute to this.
We will make sure you can develop your own talents and career, just as we expect you to do the same for students and junior faculty.
The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the racial divide in our nation. The health outcomes of Black, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos as well as immigrants during this pandemic are by several measures on par with those of people in poor countries with much less sophisticated medical systems and technology.
Though these health disparities are certainly worsened by poverty, they are not erased by income and education.
The elevated rates of these serious illnesses have weaponized the coronavirus to catastrophic effects among Black, Latino, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and immigrants in America.
While social media has been able to highlight these inequities by providing citizens with a platform, it has also provided space for hate speech and the spread of misinformation.
The Trump administration has neglected to take an active lead to address the various inequities that have arisen because of the pandemic.
Instead, they have chosen to politicize the pandemic and reframed it to something politically racial i. In addition, the role that elected officials, bureaucrats and activists play in policy making has led to the highlighting of additional hurdles such as the digital divide, affordable housing, and food security.
This edited volume seeks research on the minority experiences with Covid Lack of Policy or conflicting policy to address Covid 19 at all levels of government housing, internet access, food security.
Traditional and nontraditional media representation and coverage of minority communities and COVID We hope this 2-day Forum will provide a welcoming space to gather together and share information.
AI, gene editing, and precision medicine are only the latest of the pressing issues that raise complex questions about utility, privacy, intellectual property, commercialization and identity requiring ELSI research.
Together, we will explore and illuminate some of the emerging issues relevant to policy, practice, and fundamental questions of what it means to be human.
In this virtual format, only a small selection of the many extraordinary research findings originally scheduled for the ELSI Congress will be presented.
Please check out the program and speakers on our website. As the COVID pandemic continues to disrupt our world, our work, and our daily lives in so many ways, we hope you and your families remain well and keep safe.

This ethnographic monograph explores how the Colombian armed conflict and a vector-borne disease called cutaneous leishmaniasis are inextricably connected and mutually reinforcing.
Situated at the intersection between STS and critical medical anthropology, this work draws on multi-sited field research conducted during the peace implementation period after the agreement reached by the Colombian government and FARC, the oldest and largest guerrilla organization in Latin America.
It engages not only with the stigmatization of leishmaniasis patients as guerrilla members and the exclusionary access to antileishmanial drugs but also with other closely related aspects that constitute the war-shaped experience of leishmaniasis in Colombia.
This work illuminates how leishmaniasis has been socially, discursively, and materially constructed as a disease of the war, and how the armed conflict is entangled with the realm of public health, medicine, and especially pharmaceutical drugs.
The anticipated start date is June 1, or possibly earlier. Funding is available for a six-month, full-time appointment; a part-time appointment for a longer period of time is also a possibility and could work very well.

The research team will also collect information on uncertainties and controversies, with a focus on the most contentious aspects of coronavirus policy in each site.
In addition, it will track key objects that are incorporated into policy discussions. These include influential epidemiological and epistemic models, important visual representations, key policy concepts, and knowledge claims about the effectiveness of public health and medical interventions.
The postdoc is also expected to play a significant role in conceptualizing, writing, and editing publications, including a project website and an edited volume.
Required qualifications: Applicants should have earned a Ph. Competitive candidates will have a successful record of empirical social scientific research in an area relevant to the project.

Women and members of under-represented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The unequal distribution of power and wealth is growing by the day, fascism and racism are on the rise across the world, and entire ecosystems are dying.
But, even as threats to life as we know it multiply, revolutionary new forms of redistributive politics are emerging.
We join this rising tide of voices to ask not only how anthropology might respond to these crises but also how to imagine another anthropology into existence.
Gather with us from wherever you are for an international experiment in carbon-conscious, radically distributed conferencing.
Food cultures are developed and enacted through a web of social and cultural relationships that produce food matters and knowledge, and food-related practices.
Works emerging from critical food studies have demonstrated how uneven power relationships take form within these food cultures and create unfair and unequal relationships to and through food ex.
These power relationships materialize in particular food matters, or materialities as inspired by new materialisms , and in the elaboration of a wide range of food-related practices, such as food production and harvesting, circulation, preparation, control, and consumption.
Current food cultures are permeated by worries that concern food production and consumption, environment and human health.
We conceive that these concerns and issues, and the solutions proposed to address them, are part of as much as they are the result of the knowledge and power relationships at play in our current food cultures.
Inspired by Stacy Alaimo and Susan J. For example, papers could work at re-complexifying how we understand the relationships between food, environment and health, so as to question how they are the resulting materialization of unequal power dynamics.
Topics may include, but are not limited to:. This critical perspective can work at deconstructing or questioning what is taken-for-granted, left unquestioned.
Abstracts of words or queries can be submitted by June 10, to myriamdurocher cunet. More details will be provided later.

Woman researchers are encouraged to apply. The thesis will take part to the field of environmental studies history of environment, sociology and anthropology of environment, science and technology studies , and engage with new approaches at the crossroads of social science, biology and digital methods.
The use of new data coming from the biological sciences has recently renewed our understanding of past and present environmental and epidemic crises.
New forms of scientific work and data sharing have emerged, enabling real-time monitoring of epidemics, informing public health interventions, and offering new sources for the history of ecosystems, bodies and societies.
As an example, the progress of molecular phylogeny the compared study of genetic sequences and of their evolutionary history opens a new space to investigate the social, based on the analysis and visualisation of biological traces by computational methods.
These suggestions are not limitative — what matters is to build a research linking environmental issues, biological data and digital tools.
The PhD candidate may also complement his work by engagement with epidemiological or naturalist surveys, or the development of data colllection, analysis and visualisation tools.
Rather than treating the drone as a result of the war on terror, this book examines contemporary targeted killing through a series of failed experiments to develop unmanned flight in the twentieth century.
These experiments are tied to histories of global control, cybernetics, racism and colonialism. Comprising 26 members, the project is concerned with an investigation of architecture as a cultural practice of ordering, that manifests aesthetically, materially, spatially, discursively as well as epistemologically.
Hence, the project is as much interested in the influence that architecture exercises on societal, cultural, scientific and technological practices of ordering as it is in how architectural practices of ordering are shaped by society, culture and science.
It furthermore focuses especially on exploring the interaction between these two territories. Given the interdisciplinary nature of its scope, the project assembles expertise from the fields of architectural history and theory, history, sociology, cultural and media studies, and design theory, further complementing them with competences in architectural design and media practice.
The fellowship program aims to expand the thematic scope and expertise of the resident research group as well as its national and international networks.
It provides two fellows per year with the opportunity to spend a research stay of months in Frankfurt am Main, GER.
One fellow each year will be selected and invited directly by the research group, the other is openly advertised. We accept applications from scholars at all career levels applicants are required to hold a PhD.
The work of the fellow should demonstrate connections with the goals of the project as well as its annual research themes, which are:.
Please note: Given the current Coronavirus situation we will monitor the situation closely and respond as needed. We commonly and ubiquitously use architectural metaphors in both everyday speech as well as various professional contexts.
At the same time, metaphors also feature prominently in the fields of architecture and urbanism, where they are being used for the development of design concepts and provide useful means to communicate, discuss and evaluate design features.
The conference aims to explore metaphors as productive mediators in processes of knowledge transfer between the fields of architecture and everyday knowledges and between architectural and other professional discourses.
It thus contributes to a broader investigation of architecture as a cultural practice of ordering pursued by the interdisciplinary LOEWE research cluster Architectures of Order, a collaboration between Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and the Technical University of Darmstadt, with the Max-Planck-Institute for European Legal History and the Deutsche Architekturmuseum as associated partners.
Metaphors, to us, provide a lens that allows us to zoom in on and examine the involvement of architecture in processes of social ordering.
The premise of the conference is that metaphors are not merely explanatory in their function but instead interfere with epistemological thought and production processes.
Metaphors rely on the incongruity between a particular term and the context within which it is being deployed, creating a space of continuous re-interpretation.
The meaning of a metaphor thus oscillates between the body of knowledge from which the metaphor stems and that within which it is used.
This consequently raises questions regarding the ways in which architecture as a practice of ordering interrelates with societal as well as disciplinary structures, orders and knowledges.
Hence, we are not only interested in the connection between different fields, but also different forms of knowledge that metaphors can facilitate and how this relates to architecture.
What is the relevance of metaphors in and for knowledge production within the fields of architecture and urbanism? How do they affect both design practices as well as theoretical discourses?
Which metaphors are of particular importance in this respect? What is the function of architectural metaphors in scientific argumentations or the construction of institutional identities?
How, and for what purpose are metaphors deployed in different disciplines, such as philosophy, law, political theory, information sciences or natural sciences?
Have architectural metaphors changed over time and in conjunction with developments in architecture?
What images of architecture are being created in disciplines that heavily draw on architectural metaphors and are they affecting architectural thinking, designing and making in return?
We welcome proposals from all disciplines, including but not limited to architectural history and theory, art history, cultural and media studies, history, sociology and design theory.
We strongly encourage applications from areas in which architectural metaphors feature prominently, e. We also welcome submissions from non-academic practitioners and thus perspectives on experienced-based knowledge, presented, e.
Please submit abstracts of no more than words for 20 minute presentations together with a short bio words in a PDF format by 1 June Proposals should be emailed to: architecture.

It has therefore been certified as a family-friendly university since and offers a dual career service. The duration of the scholarships is 6 months.
A longer-term collaboration with the goal of a doctorate within the CRC is envisaged. The basic amount of the scholarship is based on the maximum rate of the DFG 1.
In addition, an allowance for material expenses and, if applicable, a child allowance will be paid. The allocation of the fellowships is subject to the release of funds by the DFG.
The CRC is an interdisciplinary research network consisting of 15 projects and more than 60 scientists from the fields of media studies, science and technology studies, ethnology, sociol-ogy, linguistics and literature studies, computer science and medicine as well as history, edu-cation and engineering.
It has been funded by the DFG since The CRC investigates the emergence and dissemination of digitally networked, data-intensive media and understands these as cooperatively accomplished conditions for cooperation.
The research of the partici-pating subprojects focuses on data practices that are explored in the situated interplay of me-dia practices, infrastructures and public spheres.
The newly established short-term fellowship program of the CRC provides national and inter-national doctoral students the opportunity to further develop their research project in the CRC, to get to know participating researchers and to exchange ideas with them.
The research pro-jects of the scholarship holders should be thematically related to the subprojects of the CRC, so that their work can be supported by the principal investigators and their teams.
The CRC offers scholarship holders an international environment for interdisciplinary media research as well as an extensive pro-gram of events and training in ethnographic, digital, sensor-based and linguistic methods.
Ideally, you can assign the project to one of the subareas of the CRC — infrastructures, publics or praxeology. Applications from women are highly welcome and will be given special consideration in accordance with the federal state equality law.
